Integrated circuits are a type of microchip that contain many miniaturized electronic components. They are used in a wide variety of applications, from simple devices like calculators and watches to more complex systems like computers and mobile phones. Integrated circuits are manufactured through a process called lithography, in which a layer of photoresist is coated on a silicon wafer. A pattern is then projected onto the photoresist, and the exposed areas are then etched away.
