What kind of ESP32 module fits your project needs? Find it out here.
Introduction
Different kinds of projects need different specifications based on their requirements. The resources required by a project that uses a sensor to gather data and send it to a PC may differ from those that utilize voice recognition or video streaming applications. Projects that require heavy processing (such as capturing video or AI) need more headroom in RAM to process real-world signals. Requirements can also increase regarding flash memory as different frameworks come together to form the code in program memory to execute the required task.
With this, you need to know what kind of MCU you need and the flash and RAM requirements required to run your programs for your projects smoothly.
The Components of a Basic ESP32 Module
As you can see above, an ESP32 module can have varying components. The dotted lines represent options that are added to the module. You can have an additional flash chip to increase program memory or a RAM chip to increase data memory. Likewise, you can also have different sizes of flash or RAM embedded on the ESP32 chip itself. All these options make a unique ESP32 module.
All of the modules incorporate an external crystal oscillator, eliminating the need to add them yourself.
Additionally, you may get a module with a PCB antenna or with an antenna connector, whichever suits your needs.
The Different Kinds of ESP32 Series Modules
ESP32 WROOM Series
You may find modules with a WROOM name in them. These models usually don’t have an external RAM chip inside but they do have an external flash chip or flash in chip package. Hence the name WROOM. You can extend writing your program memory into the flash memories described using these modules.
ESP32 WROVER Series
The popular ESP32 WROVER series has external static RAM connected in them. This means more extended data memory for your intended applications. Examples of these applications are AIoT, and video camera streaming applications, to name a few. If you have an ESP32-CAM, You may see it as an ESP32-S module which is actually an ESP32 WROVER module.Â
ESP32 MINI Series
The ESP32 MINI series have smaller form factors. This makes them versatile for space-constrained applications. However, some users who don’t have advanced soldering skills might find them difficult to work with since they don’t have castellated pads. Instead, they may have their pads underneath them.
ESP32 PICO Series
These ESP32 modules are probably the smallest of the batch. You may find them smaller than the MINI’s for similar applications. They usually have the PICO version of the ESP32’s which come in an LGA package which is extremely small.
